Science, Technology, and Hope

Here in the States, we hear a lot about STEM learning. In Liberia, science and technology education does not look the same. In order to enhance and strengthen the teaching of science education in Liberian schools, the Ministry of Education in collaboration with Peace Corps Liberia have officially launched, this year, the Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) Approach Strengthening program.

Hope International has grown its science and technology education.

In 2016, with the establishment of the school’s science and computer labs, hands-on learning opportunities were created. Join us in celebrating the evolution of these labs over the last 6 years.

Hope and Science

Through the generosity of many of you, Hope International’s science lab, according to alumni students, is one of the very best high school labs in the country. High school students take coursework in one of the three lab classrooms: biology, chemistry, and physics. Through the generosity of one of our Hope Squared partners, their monthly donation makes it possible to purchase science supplies for these classrooms.

Hope and Computers

In 4th grade, students begin taking technology courses in Hope International’s computer lab, on computers that were purchased through your generosity.

These are big opportunities for the students. Maybe it isn’t surprising then that in the Class of 2021, 20% of our seniors wish to pursue further education in computer science or technology.

We are grateful for all the support along the way and look forward to growing these two school programs as we are able.

Together, we are The Hope Project.

Starting Over

Friends of Hope,

We won’t bore you with the long saga of our Facebook challenges.  In short, Facebook canceled our account in October 2021 stating that we had violated Facebook policy. This came as a big surprise, as our Facebook page was certainly not controversial and used only as a communication and connection tool, keeping you and our team in Liberia connected.

We appealed this decision and were never able to connect with someone that could help. Unfortunately, our page and all the contents were deleted. We believe it was an obvious mistake and have now begun the process of restarting and rebuilding.

If you are a Facebook user, would you support us by going and liking our new page. You will find us at The Hope Project-Liberia @hopeprojectliberia.

We would so appreciate your support in this way.

It's Never Too Late…Ask Evelyn

One of our dear Hope Project friends shared that after learning of Evelyn’s story during our (un)Event 2022, she promptly placed Evelyn’s photo near her desk. She wanted a daily reminder that if Evelyn can do what she is doing, then certainly, she could face whatever challenges come her way throughout the day.

Evelyn

Evelyn is 44 years old and in the 5th grade. She attends night school each evening at Hope International. Evelyn was forced to quit elementary as a child because her parents could not afford the school fees. Later, the civil wars further decreased her chances for an education. With the support of her family and friends, Evelyn started attending night school with the goal of obtaining her high school diploma. She shared that “I now understand the importance of education and how it makes you strong as a person.”

The destruction of schools during the civil wars made it nearly impossible for an entire generation to receive a formal education. Many in this generation, now in adulthood, long for the opportunity to have a second chance at education. Adults in the surrounding community of Gardnersville attend classes 5 nights a week at Hope International night school.

We stand beside these adult learners who continue to grow and pursue.

Together, we are The Hope Project.
